Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming English Language Teaching (ELT) in Indonesia, particularly in Senior High Schools (SMA), by addressing challenges such as low student motivation and limited resources, especially post-pandemic. This research aims to examine the use of AI in ELT for Indonesian high school students from 2020 to 2025, identifying trends, benefits, challenges, and impacts of AI integration. This study adopted a qualitative Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. An initial comprehensive search on Google Scholar yielded 3665 documents, with 14 articles selected for analysis after rigorous screening. Findings indicate a significant increase in publications since 2022, with Natural Language Processing (NLP) being the most common AI technology, primarily enhancing speaking and writing skills. Key benefits include personalized learning, increased student engagement, improved communicative skills, and reduced teacher workload. However, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, varying teacher competency, cultural sensitivity, high costs, and ethical concerns regarding data privacy remain. The study concludes that while AI has transformative potential in enhancing ELT effectiveness and accessibility, successful implementation requires addressing these challenges through strategic investment in infrastructure, teacher training, and ethical frameworks.
