The Revolution of independent Learning: How Smart Students Master Mathematical Problem-Solving Through Autonomy in Social Arithmetic

Education holds an important role in shaping high-quality human resources. One of the key aspects of education is mathematics learning, as mathematics contributes to the development of logical, systematic, and analytical thinking skills. This study aims to analyze the relationship between independent learning and students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities among seventh-grade students at SMP Ignatius Slamet Riyadi Jakarta on the topic of Social Arithmetic. The study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The research sample consisted of 30 students selected using a simple random sampling technique. The research instruments included an independent learning questionnaire (30 items) and a mathematical problem-solving essay test (6 questions). Data were analyzed using the Spearman Rank test. The results revealed a significant positive relationship between independent learning and mathematical problem-solving ability, with a correlation coefficient of ρ = 0.576 and p = 0.001 (p < 0.05). This indicates that the higher the students’ level of independent learning, the better their ability to solve mathematical problems. These findings highlight the importance of fostering independent learning as a key strategy to improve the quality of mathematics education.
