Question and Answer Technique to Enhance Students’ Speaking Skill

Abstract

English has become the most important foreign language in the world. Teaching English is conducted to develop people ability in using English in four skills which are identified as listening, speaking, reading and writing. For students in high school, speaking is one of skill in English lesson. In speaking class, the student of vocational high school learn how to pronounce the word in English, learn how to describe person, place, and thing, introduce themselves fluently, make a dialogue and understand about the meaning of the English. The objective of this research is to enhance the students’ speaking skill through question and answer technique. This research was conducted to find out how much enhancement in students’ speaking skills after learning by using question and answer technique. This study also observed the students’ response in speaking class after taught by using question and answer technique. The method of this research is qualitative research by using classroom action research. The research was conducted in 3 cycles and involved 33 vocational high school students. The data obtained by using observation, interviews, and tests. The data of the research showed that there was a significant difference of the students’ achievement in each cycle. There was an increase of speaking score in cycle 1 to cycle 3. It showed that question and answer technique can enhance the students’ speaking skill. Teachers can use question and answer as alternative technique to teach speaking in the class.
